CHITRAL: A forgotten monument from the era of the British Raj has become the centre of an unusual dispute between local villagers and those determined to preserve its colonial history. The decaying memorial commemorates a six-week siege, but for people living around it, the monument represents a very different and uncomfortable past. The controversy raises a larger question still relevant across former British colonies: Should the relics of empire be preserved as history- or allowed to disappear?

The idea may be liked by the Royal family, particularly the descendants of Mehtar Shuja ul Mulk, but many Chitralis, especially the neo-intellectuals may oppose the move.
If we as a nation have any sense of right or wrong we should not forget the absolute tyranny that the British inflicted upon us for nearly two centuries the effects of which has moulded our very character of subservience as a people, those who supported and benefited from the British era should hang their heads instead of raising monuments to that period.
