SNGPL Decides to Speed Up Work On Modified LPG Project For Chitral Town

CHITRAL: The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has decided to speed up work on a long-delayed gas supply project in Chitral, with gas plants planned at three locations.

A team from SNGPL’s Mardan Region recently visited Chitral and held a meeting with former MNA Shahzada Iftikharuddin to review the project and discuss the next steps. The delegation included Admin In-charge Murtaza Tanoli, Executive Engineer Syed Majid Ali, Deputy Chief Engineer Nauman Ali and administrative staff member Rahmat Hussain.

Under the new plan, gas will not be supplied to homes through pipelines. Instead, cylinders will be filled at the three plants and sold to consumers at around Rs1,200 below the prevailing market price.

Work on the first plant has already started at Singur. SNGPL has signed agreements to rent warehouses on privately owned land near the site for storing gas cylinders. Plants will later be established at Drosh and Broz, while SNGPL staff will soon be posted at all three locations.

The project was originally approved by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) during the government of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and the plants were inaugurated in 2018. However, the project was cancelled by the ECC in 2019 during the PTI government.

Once completed, the project is expected to benefit around 190,000 people across Chitral. Around 100,000 people in Chitral town, 60,000 in the Drosh region and another 30,000 in Ayun and nearby areas are expected to receive the facility.

The project is also expected to reduce people’s dependence on firewood, helping ease pressure on local forests and reduce tree cutting.

Residents have welcomed the renewed progress on the project and expressed hope that the gas plants will be completed soon, giving people access to a cheaper and more convenient alternative source of fuel. .. CN report, 08 Sep 2026
