Former MNA Warns of Glacial Disaster Due to Crude Mining Practice

CHITRAL: Former MNA and PML leader Shazada Iftikharuddin has raised concern about crude and unregulated mining in Chitral’s mountains. He particularly mentioned mentioned Utrai Gol, above Murdan Garam Chashma, where heavy machinery is being used at an altitude of nearly 15,000 feet. Residents fear the activity is damaging glaciers and threatening water resources.

The former MNA who has earlier spoken against deforestation has raised the issue in a social media post, sharing a video in which a local resident complained about mining and the dumping of excavated material on glaciers.

Residents say the area’s glaciers are already melting rapidly. They fear further damage could reduce water supplies and increase environmental risks. Murdan had suffered major destruction in the 2015 flash floods, reportedly linked to a glacial lake outburst.

The concerns also extend to Baisti, a designated wildlife conservancy, where mining could damage fragile habitats and biodiversity.

Residents have also questioned the distribution of mining leases, alleging that most are awarded to outsiders while local prospectors face difficulties obtaining licences. They claim information about mineral discoveries is sometimes passed to outsiders.

Shahzada Iftikhar and environmental advocates have urged the KP government and relevant departments to strengthen monitoring and assess the impact of mining on glaciers, water, wildlife and local communities before allowing further operations. .. CN report, 09 Sep 2026
