Chitral’s Peace Under Potential Threat: Rising Militancy and Security Concerns
اردو.. by Amira Bashir
Chitral has long been known as one of the most peaceful regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, growing militancy and tensions along the
Pakistan-Afghanistan border are threatening its peace, security and future development.
Since 2023, several attacks and cross-border incidents have raised security concerns. In February 2026, shelling in the Arandu area of Lower Chitral reportedly injured six people and displaced more than 3,500 residents. In June, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed an attack on a security post in Drosh. Other reported incidents near Garam Chashma have added to local concerns, although some claims remain independently unverified.
Chitral’s mountainous terrain and long border with Afghanistan make security monitoring difficult. Instability in neighbouring Afghan districts and militant activity in nearby Upper Dir further increase the risks.
The consequences extend beyond security. Chitral has significant potential for tourism, trade and regional connectivity because of its proximity to Afghanistan, China and Central Asia. Continued violence could discourage tourists, harm local businesses and reduce employment opportunities.
The situation also raises concerns for the Ismaili and Kalash communities, whose safety and peaceful coexistence are essential to Chitral’s diverse cultural identity.
Although security operations are necessary, authorities must ensure that counterterrorism measures do not overshadow education, healthcare, roads and disaster preparedness.
Protecting Chitral requires effective border security, cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and sustained investment in local development. Preserving peace is essential not only for the people of Chitral but also for the region’s economic and strategic future. .. Source
