Met dept issues avalanche warning in Chitral area

Peshawar:?Pakistan Meteorological Department Islamabad (PMD) warned on Friday of a high risk of avalanches in Chitral area and other snow-capped areas of Hindukush in the wake an earthquake of magnitude 6.2.

Deputy Commissioner Chitral has been informed regarding the upcoming avalanche situation in the snowbound areas in the District to take precautionary measures respectively in the vulnerable areas.

As per Drosh Additional Assistant Commissioner, three employees of PTCL in Nagar Drosh valley were heading to Lowari Top the other day for checking of PTCL tower when an avalanche hit them. One of the three persons remained unscathed while two are still missing.

An eight-member specialised Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team of Rescue 1122, equipped with specialized equipment for the snow-bound rescue operation, was dispatched from Mardan to Lowari Top.

The USAR team has reached District Chiral and the operation is underway. Pakistan Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) is said to be in contact with the district administration in Chitral for further coordination and provision of further possible assistance if needed. :.. Source
