Telling Lies: The Mother of All Sins

CHITRAL: In our society today, the grave sin of lying is taken far too lightly. The reality is that it is the root of every sin, the gateway through which evil enters the heart. In Islam, lying is a Gunāh Kabīra—a major sin—condemned repeatedly in the Qur’an and by the Prophet ﷺ. The Holy Qur’an clearly declares:

“Indeed, the curse of Allah is upon the liars.” — Surah Aal-Imran 3:61

When examined seriously, a single lie opens the path to theft, betrayal, injustice, hypocrisy, and corruption. In fact, no sin can survive without a lie to protect it.

Every religion, across history, echoes this warning: truth is sacred; falsehood is destructive. When lying becomes normal, families fracture, societies decay, and nations crumble. Nothing destroys trust, honour, and faith faster than a dishonest tongue. Sadly, this is exactly what has afflicted our nation the most.

Lying has become so casually accepted that it is almost part of our culture now. A person who consumes alcohol or drugs is scorned far more than a habitual liar, despite the fact that the former is doing harm to himself in person but the later is damaging the society at large by telling lies. Our people must be made to understand, firmly and persistently, that a liar may deceive others temporarily, but he cannot escape the spiritual consequences: a blackened heart, a tarnished character, and the curse of Allah upon those who persist in falsehood. Truth elevates; lies humiliate.

As a nation and a society, if we desire cleaner hearts, stronger relationships, and a just environment, we must begin by abandoning lies—both big and small. For when you cut the root of falsehood, you cut the roots of all other sins.

Speak the truth, even when it is difficult. Especially when it is difficult“.

  1. The habit of lying has deeply damaged our society, eroding our values and trust. This moral decline is a major reason we have fallen so low as a nation.
