CHITRAL: The current situation in Pakistan has developed gradually to a point where the case of Democracy has almost crumbled and a logical case for adoption of ‘Meritocracy‘ has become ever so relevant. Democratic system is whining and squealing under it’s own weight.
Due to incapacity of the constituents of democracy which is a natural result of the system of elections where people vote into office persons without any consideration for their capabilities or capacity to deliver the responsibilities of governance, the powerful Military has virtually put it’s heavy boots on the system.
The parliament has virtually become a rubber stamp and the power that is (the military) which earlier would remain tacitly unassertive and in the background have now become so audacious as to come to the fore and hit sixers off lousy balls from incapable politicians.

The incapability of politicians is intrinsic to the existing system which we call democracy because there is no criteria for selection of politicians other than the ‘vote’ system which itself has now become battered and desecrated. Even an illiterate, imbecile person can become an elected representative provided he can manage the election.
After the recent controversial judgment of the Supreme court, the existing coalition government has been ‘gifted’ enough reserved seats to push it into a 2/3 majority position, enabling it to amend the constitution. This SC decision though unjust in every way you look at it, may nevertheless (leaving aside the justification part) prove a blessing in disguise for the future of Pakistan if proceeded as per a positive plan of re-writing the constitution to adopt the system of ‘Meritocracy‘ instead of the current ‘election’ system.
It’s time we get out of the ‘personalities dependence’ syndrome and strive for a logical and rational system based on merit and fairness, where every Pakistani has an equal chance to become the President, Governor, Senator, MNA, MPA, etc without being part of any mafia. – Nothing can be more fair and productive for Pakistan, rather the whole world, than ‘Meritocracy‘ .. Meritocracy is the only methodology by which a fair system of choosing law makers can be adopted. Any other system may not provide us with a fair election system. The people who elect are as important. For example literacy, general awareness, religious values, economic health is as important.
