Women block Chitral bazar road to protest irregularities in BISP program

Women protest in Chitral bazar

CHITRAL: In a first of its kind, women protesters gathered in main Chitral bazar and blocked the road at the busy PIA chowk. The protesters were complaining that cash disbursement according to the Benazir Income Support Program  (BISP) was not being made to them according to the schedule of the program.

The BISP was started during the time of Ex Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto according to which selected women from the poor section of the society were to be paid Rs 3000 per month per family, disbursed on quarterly basis.

For this payment women come from far away villages to the town to get the money from the banks, but when they find they can’t get their dues for one reason or the other they get frustrated.

This time the women took to the Bazar, not for shopping but in anger and frustration to vent their feelings. Police officials arrived at the scene and after negotiations, the crowd  left the azar and headed for the press club where they voiced their protest in front of journalists .. 1. Women’s protest is a strong indicator of growing social awareness in a tribal/rural society like ours
