CHITRAL: The ritual of offering a sacrifice to Allah in the form of slaughtering an animal is in practice since the time of our Holy Prophet (PBUH) and is a Sunnah. Although according to Imam Shaafie, and other Ulema, the first two Caliphs i.e Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA) and Hazrat Umar (RA) never ever slaughtered an animal on Eid ul Azha.
The ritual of Qurbani (slaughtering of animals as a sacrifice) was performed individually by Hajis at the time of Haj , but with passage of time and increase in population iof hajis it was transformed into a central operation, where Hajis contributed the money and animals slaughtered on their behalf at a central dedicated place having due facilities. In this way no Haji gets to see the animal nor is their share of meat given back to them, but the ritual is considered to having being performed..
In Pakistan, the population is out of control. Civic facilities are almost non existent. People are buying animals days in advance and keeping them in their small houses, creating nuisance for their neighbours and the locality. The ‘show off’ factor is more visible than any spirit of sacrifice.
In order to curb the menace of ‘show off’ at the time of sacrificing animals on Eidul Azha, the govt should pass a law to follow the procedure of Qurbani as is adopted at the time of Haj. Persons should contribute money or turn in their animals to government/authentic public organisations who should slaughter them keeping the name of the contributor anonymous and distribute the meat to the poor and needy. In this way the rat race to impress and coax the neighbours and onlookers by buying a more expensive animal ‘than the other’ will be put to an end.
Times have changed and we must adopt new and feasible practices. If it can be done at Haj, why can’t it be done in the country. A law should be passed immediately to come into effect before next Eid ul Azha. .. Eid Mubarak to all ..CN report, 21 Jul 2021

If slaughtering an animal is a Sunnat and if Caliphs Hazrat Abu Bakar and Hazrat Umar, two of the closest companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), did not observe it, then why is so much importance being given to it by religious people compared to other Sunnats like being Truthful and Trustworthy (Sadiq and Ameen) the highest Sunnat of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). It is sure more of culture than religion which is influencing here.
If procedure of qurbani is enforced in the country like it is done at Haj time, where individual qurbani is not allowed. The qurbani giver only pays the money but remains anonymous and qurbani is done on his/her behalf at a designated place by the government or an organization. If this procedure is adopted then the element of showing off will be eliminated and along with it most problems in this regard will be solved.
