Candle of Hope for
Mulkhow -letter
I had an opportunity to visit my hometown Mulkhow a month ago and being
dweller of the area, I was much enthusiastic to know about the progress made
on the Attahk Canal Project.
The Atahk Canal is being constructed with the help of government of NWFP. If
the Canal is constructed, it would irrigate a huge part of barren land
encompassing from Kosht valley to Zezdi / Madak vaily. This terrain is
dependent on springs water which flow out if the rain is sufficient but
unfortunately since last 2.5 decades the terrain has been short of rain.
Consequently, precious fruit bearing trees have been destroyed and seasonal
crops are not being efficiently produced.
Keeping in view the damages done due to shortage of water, elders of the
area had started work on the project with a meager financial support of the
then government in 1984. As the project was demanding quite large amount of
funds but the issued funds were even not sufficient to build infrastructure
and acquire required machineries.
Although the reality of the project was far away, but adamant people did not
lose hope and worked on the project with self support. In 2006, when
President Pervez Musharaf visited Upper Chitral District, the Canal issue
was raised to him, and President approved the required funds for the project
and directed authorities to release the funds immediately. With inline the
direction of the honorable President, funds were released and work to
construct a broader infrastructure started, which is now almost complete and
machineries have been commissioned to the site and work on the actual canal
has started.
It is our humble request to the local, district and provincial governments
to give their due attention to the project and make sufficient funds
available, so that the project could be completed within the stipulated
time.
This project is a backbone for the development of the area and without
availability of sufficient water, prosperity of the area could not be
realized.
Saif ur Rahim
Gaht (Warijun), Mulkhow
